Best Cover Songs Ever!!

I was checking out the new Green Day cover of one of my favorite John Lennon songs--Working Class Hero--and I started thinking about some cover songs that I really like. Then I thought "Hey!" I exclaimed to myself. I exclaimed "Hey! Why don't you do a 20 best cover songs ever list just like you did that 80 Best Rock Songs Ever list a a while back. And then I remembered how well that one worked out since I just kept adding songs...and forgetting others, not to mention the fact that who the hell am I to say what the best are. So instead I'm going to write about some covers that I think are very nice. It in no way implies that they are the best and that your favorites suck or something. Except for the ones YOU like. Those ones really do suck.
So what makes a good cover song? A lot of these songs i think are not only on par with the original version, but many of them are better. Also, a good cover is going to do something different than just a exact version of the original. As pain pill popping Paula Abdul would say on that show that she does sometimes..."They made it their own." So without any further ado...

AWESOME COVER SONGS. PARTY TIME. EXCELLENT!!

1. If you liked the Carpenters version of Superstar...which is basically about some crazy girl stalking a rock star who fucked her on the way through to the next gig and she actually thinks he's coming back for her you need to check out Sonic Youth's cover. And if you hate the Carpenters you'll really like this one because he really does make it his song. It qualifies as haunting...and it's a nice tribute to the number one most played at the dentist and for the Musac in the elevator...Miss. Karen Carpentor.

2. Jolene. Dolly Parton begged Jolene to please not take her man..even though that pretty bitch can. And Jack White of the White Stripes ends up doing the same. Most impressively to me is the fact that he doesn't change the words to the song and make Jolene a Joe for fear that he might sound too gay. He has other things to worry about. Like that home wrecking hussy Jolene taking his man away. I saw the stripes preform this before I even knew who they were and it made an impression.

3. Hurt. This song was a tearjerker when Trent Reznor sang it. When Johnny Cash steps up to the microphone bringing his own hurt out there for us to feel it's heartbreaking. June Carter Cash, the love of his life was gone and he would be right behind her, to follow her into the dark like a good husband should.

4 Hit me Baby One More Time. Yeah, its was Brittney's song, but not after Travis Hill take a stab at it. I've noticed a trend in the covers I like Wanna hear it ? here it goes....The best one seem to strip the song down to the basics instead of going bigger, louder and uncut.

5. Hey Ya. I kept seeing stuff about this version, starring someone named Waddle from a band called Obadiah. I finally watched it and my life has never been the same. Well..I just saw it earlier today...and i guess my life hasn't changed that much, but yours might. Everybody else has by now and its a real nice surprise. Like getting woken up to oral sex. Your just in a better mood for it. 6. Working Class Hero. It's the one that inspired me to waste my time on this list in the fast place. Its a great political song and Greenday seem to be right out there being one of our more political musicians.

Ok...I hardly got any sleep and I'm all of a sudden falling there. So the list will be ...nodding off. end of transmission. I will make a part two. What did you think about these so far?

What Would Jankey Choose

It's one am..I just got home from work, and I started thinking to myself "What the good people of myspace need are more lists of things that I like. There are billions of poor lost souls out there searching for something, anything to fill the empty places in their life." (not convinced? try reading it in a wise matronly British accent, a Mary Poppins voice if you will... thats how I thought it and I believe whatever that voice tells me).Perhaps what they are searching for are quality movie, music, book and TV picks that are Jankey approved. Who do I think I am to deprive anyone of such a small gift. I'm not so special to ignore this mission..but my What would Jankey Choose All Star Wednesday picks are good. They are That Good.
Seriously, I needed something to fill the gap between my semi- regular Tuesday horoscopes and Sex Blog Thursday so here are a few things I recommended from the pop cultural landscape.

Movies. What qualifies me to recommended movies to you? Well I work in the glamorous fast paced world of movie rentals. duh! And one of the things that makes my life so much better than yours is that I get to rent movies a week before the rest of the world does. So unless you've done something extreme, like seen it in a theater, I may give you a heads up on what to look for and what to avoid. Thats assuming I don't have any late fees because when you work there you can't owe anything at all or they won't let you rent. And pre-streets (thats what they are called in the biz) are only one day rentals so its easy to get late fees. Don't look for any prestreet recommendations today though...I have late fees. And besides..nothing B movie crap comes out next week anyway.

A. Pans Labyrinth.

OK, in all seriousness this in one of the best movies to come out for rental in a while. Visually it is outstanding which means it stands out from the pack. (sorry..is the snobby know it all voice outwearing its welcome?I'll tone it down.) It is a Spanish movie set in fascist Spain in which a young girl and her mom go to live in the country with the mom's new husband, a sadistic ultraviolet general who is trying to crush the guerrilla resistance in the surrounding woods. The movie is a fairy tale really, more Brothers Grim than Mother Goose. The girl soon discovers a bizarre magicical world hidden just beneath the hopeless reality of her own. A horned Pan-esque creature called a Fawn sends her on three character testing missions as things continue to get worse at home. Thats all I'm giving away from the plot, but I will give you a couple of heads up, because that's just what I do.
First, this is not a fairy tale to show your kids. It is brutally violent in places and the scary monsters will give them nightmares. There was one scene in particular where I had to look away from the screen and every time I glanced back what I couldn't watch was still happening. The violence isn't glamorized but it is frightening...

Second, the movie is in subtitles. That fact alone has turned so many people away from seeing it which is sad. You wouldn't believe some of the ways American movie watchers react to the shocking news that movies are made in other languages. Its become standard practice this last week to warn people about the subtitles after mass angry calls and returns.
One woman I warned got into an angry racist discussion with a lady next to her in line. "Why do they have to go ruin good movies like that?" she asked dumbstruck. Apparently we had shattered her illusion that the rest of the world is either too poor and/or stupid to make thier own movies. And how dare they inflict their language on us. We are Americans dammit. Both ladies agreed that the last thing you wanted to do was listen to Spanish of all languages. Not on purpose. The fact that the womans husband is Cuban had little affect on her view of the Spanish language. It always surprises me that people can be so willing to give such rude and racist opinions to strangers, confident that everybody will agree. It seems that around here (Oregon, I can't say for other places) Mexicans are a group that it is becoming frighteningly popular to talk bad about . Another woman,(who was Russian) after I informed her of the whole subtitle businessjust kept repeating over and over like a mantra "Thats Stupid. ugh. Thats stupid. Thats so stupid." And to answer the number one most asked question of the week...no we don't have any copies just in English. Yes, all the copies on the shelf are in Spanish and its not gonna do you any good to go to Blockbuster because it's not just our company with the bad taste to put foreign movies on the shelf. Sorry, that was a rant...but jeez. It can really make you lose respect for people. More so than if they are big renters of Steven Segall, Van Damm or Jessica Simpson.

B. Sherry Baby.

If I had to describe this movie in one word it would be ....honest, but I'm going to use a few more words. You know me, a regular Chatty Cathy. It stars Maggie Gylenhal as a woman just released from prison and dealing with trying to start a new life without falling back into the heroin habit. Her brother and his wife have been raising her young daughter, the system seems to work against her and shes got herself a real fucked up relationship with Daddy dearest. This movie could easily gone the cliche route of bringing out the sad music when we are supposed to cry and telling us everyapect of these characters pasts that explains why they are what they are, but it doesn't .You can infer volumes from the way Sherry fights for her dads atttention at a family gettogether.Maggie Gylenhal was robbed of an Oscar nomination which she clearly deserves for so completely bringing this character to living, breathing, damaged life.

Books. Since this has turned into a monster I will only do one book pick today. I was going to do a whole section of how fucking awesome Chuck Pahlonick is complete with all kinds of interesting facts but I want to get to bed and you are probably halfway out the door to the video store. Chuck wrote the book that became the movie "Fight Club" with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. I like that movie a lot, but it one of the only books by him i haven't gotten around to reading yet. But I have read "Choke" and so should you.
Trying to summarize one of his novels is like teaching Spanish from a Taco Bell menu. It won't do it justice and won't really tell you anything about the real story. OK fine..the main character is a sex addict who works in a cheesy Colonial Village with his loser friend who is always being locked in the stockade. He gets extra money by pretending to choke in restaurants, which gives someone else a chance to "save his life" which somehow ends up with them writing him periodic checks. Oh, and his mother was a crazy extreme activist who did things like switch the labels on colors of hair dye in the store or release the animals at the zoo. Go read it. At the very least it will make you that much hipper.

Music. Download
"When the Sun Goes Down" by the Arctic Monkeys "
Nasty Naughty Boy" by Christina Augularia
Crooked Teeth" by Death Cab for Cutie
"Apology Song" by the Decemberists
"Jolene" the Dolly Parton and the White Stripes version
"Needle in the Hay" by Elliot Smith
Angie Baby" by Helen Reddy
"Trailer Trash" by Modest Mouse
"Papa Don't Know (What Mama's Gonna Do Tonight)" by the New Pornographers...and since thats a remake get another one of their sons..try "Ballad of a Comeback Kid"
"Kissing the Lipless" by the Shins
"Superstar" the Carpenters and Sonic Youth version. compare the versions and also listen to the words and see if it's what you always thought it was about. Did you think it was about a crazy stalker who lets a rock star fuck her while he's playing in her town then tells her "Maybe I'll be back again someday" and she obsesses like a psycho over him. hey..thats just my take on it. Maybe you hear a love song.
"If you want to sing out sing out" by Cat Stevens from the "Harold and Maude" soundtrack.
At the very least you will have a very interesting playlist while you respond to my blog with some top recommendations of your own.

Tv. If you haven't been watching the most recent "The Real World" you don't know what you've been missing! Psych. I haven't spent much time with those brats or liked any of them since Real World Hawaii...*I miss Ruthie. She was unfairly painted as an out of control alcoholic and forced to go to rehab but now you can't get an audition unless you show up drunk and ready to fuck. You have a lot of recommendations from me already. Watch your season finales and I'll help you find some awesome shows on DVD this summer. Fine, you don't have to twist my arm. Your assignment is to watch at least the first two seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and write an essay discussing Angel going scary evil as a metaphor for a guy suddenly turning into a different person the morning after a girl sleeps with him.
What are you waiting for. Didn't you ask for my advice on what you should fill your head with? You didn't? Oh...well I'm still asking yours. What are some of your favorites this week? I hate to tag people because who knows what will happen to my fragile ego when my call to action is ignored...but you have my permission to tag yourself. Or fuck yourself for all I care.(I care. if you want to write about your favorite ways to do that I'm all ears.)

new music and funny comedy Hour with .Liberace

Thursday, February 15, 2007

boring personal stuff. best just to skip.

channel 214 presents
The New Music and Funny Comedy Hour with ...Liberace. (heres your announcer Earl) Hey Hey baby's. This is ...well you can just plain tell I ain't Liberace. And I don't right feel right about playing that I am. This is our new show where we spotlight the new funny and musical videos that we stole,....er found . And we couldn't think of a person to host that was funny and musical except for Sarah Silverman and Fern came up with Liberace. Fern is the lady who answers the phones. You haven't met her on account of her boyfriend seems to keep accidentally hitting her in the face with a door and it doesn't look too good on camera.First Fern suggested Kathy from the funny pages cuz she thinks that gal Kathy is Hilarious...but she is not musical and that made her invalid. And since Liberace was kinda a funny man...a real funny duck...he would be good..but he is also dead. Anyway...we're still looking for a host but until then watch these two clips. Its also not an hour either but the New Music and Funny Comedy 8 minutes didn't sound as good.

Grammy Awards who?

Are the Grammy s still a big deal? I haven't seen them in years, and while that in and of itself doesn't mean anything I like to think I have a decent "buzz: radar even in my old age, and I don't ever really hear to much about the Grammys unless I'm watching CBS the week of the event and they spam me with Grammy commercials. But I can't think of any reason why I would be watching CBS this year, and I guess I heard about them somewhere. I thought we could take a look at some of the grammy nominees...many for my first time. Yeah maybe I'm not so buzz-tacular after all. Lets see what the kids...er if you can call the Grammy voters kids, are listening to these days.

Record of the Year....
1.Mary J. Blige "Be 'Without You". Hey...I was thinking I didn't know this song and when i play it on youtube it turns out I know all the words to the chorus at least...or enough that I can fake the rest with my own mix of made up lyrics. It's catchy...and has a nice little groove. It's not gonna be on my 10 most played list..or even 20..but I would play it sometime. I'd give it a grade of...B.

2.James Blunt.."Your beautiful". Oh...this song. Yeah...it was this years "It was Everywhere!!!" song. I guess if i needed quick confidence boost. Or ..this would be the perfect song for all those myspace people who have the quizzes and surveys that consist of anything but narcissistic questions about how cute you think they are or how cool you think they are...or whatever else that they need some validation with. Yeah, I think this is who this song is really intended for. grade of...i guess C

3. Dixie Chicks "Not Ready to Make Nice". This would be my choice for winner out of the nominees. Not only is it the only song from this list that I have in my play list the fact that it's a response to all those small minded, big mouthed Bush Lovers is just really damn cool. I was never really a fan of The Dixie Chicks...I didn't not like them..just didn't know much about them...but now I'm seeking them out to listen to and read about. From what I can see I like the way they carried themselves during the whole stupid...do we call it a controversy? oh brother. My grade is an ....A.

4.Gnarles Barkley "Crazy". OK...I'm a lier. This was also that song you heard everywhere...and that includes my play list. So..you got me twice. This is a good, catchy song. I give it an A. but I'm still rooting for the dixie chicks if only for the message..and how much that would piss off some people that its fun to piss off.

5. Corinne Bailey "Put Your Records On"- If I learned one lesson here its that I should maybe put some time into preparation for these blogs and not always just jump in. This is a great song..and I do know it , of course. I might like it the best. It's happy, feel good, sunny...all good. I give it an A. I'm still rooting for the Chicks to win for their big fuck you to their former "fans".\

Video of the Year(short form, whatever that means)

1.8th of November Big & Rich http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWq7IXTtsoM
ok..song was ok...and it is a good story about a corageous guy. But video of the year? It was pretty manipulative. It would be the equivalant of give the Oscar to Pearl Harbor. I don't know...C+

2.The Killers.."When you were young". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsw6rEMwo4U
I like the Killers. The song is great and the video is pretty good too.I would have to see it a few more times before I tried to anylyze it. I say it deserves a B.

3.OK GO "Here it goes again" This video is just too cool. Its fun to watch, innovative and really stands out from these others that look pretty pretensious and
overdone compared. I give it an A+

4.Red Hot Chilly Peppers " Dani California"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJA15-u2cqA
Good song. fun video.Wheezer did the same concept 1o years ago but much better. B

5/UnderOath. "Writing on the walls". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_xbkt1EyHYI
like the video, but this song made me feel like I really am getting old...cuz it sounded like a lot of noise to me. video B.

I could think of a few choices that are better than a lot on here. Death Cab's "I will follow you" for one. Hell...i get more excited when the snakes on a plane video comes on more than 2/3 of the nominated songs and video's.

13 songs/video's you Must Have or You Will Die

I love lists. Maybe its that touch of obsessive compulsive I have in me. But it just makes me feel that all is right with the world when i can see that it is numbered and labeled. Funny that when it comes to actually cleaning my OCD seems to give up and not even bother. I reorganize my movies and books by so many different systems (besides the normal alphabetical and categorical I arrange them from coolest to not cool among other ways)or risk my anxiety giving my stomach crazy seizures but when it comes to picking up a dish or putting away my clothes I'm suddenly not worried about it."Eh" says my anxiety. "Let him live in filth. But by God Hard Candy is going to be in a more prominent place on the shelf than Benchwarmers! In reality it makes my stomach hurt to let a movie like bench warmers sit on a shelf that could be associated with me. I'm such a snob...yet I recommended "Snakes on a Plane: to everybody who asked...or didn't. Oy...Its just the Gemini way...or my OCD DID way. anyway, i think I was about to make some lists.
13 Songs you need on your play list.
1.When the Sun Goes Down- Arctic Monkeys. A sing a long about a jankey bastard and the hookers he uses when the sun goes down. I like the subject matter...the vocals...and the repeat playability.

2. I want you to want me-Cheap Trick A classic feel good song. I listen to this when I'm getting ready for work. Just a great start the day song. I started to become friends with an old friend, Britta, when we worked in this call center and I stared singing /mouthing the words to this from across the room. good times.

3.Ain't No Other Man-Christiana Agularia. ..ok..yeah thats so gay. And if you told me that her Back to Basics Cd's would be on my MUST have play list I would have relentlessly tormented your teeny bopper taste. But it is good. And she makes you feel damn good about still having the nasty in you.You could exchange this song for probably any other song on these cd's and be happy, I'm serious.Try Still dirty or Come on over Baby. See if that doesn't get you on your feet or trying to belt out some tunes. And I have always admired how comfortable she is with her sexuality. It really comes through in a positive way here. And since I'm already in the music credibility doghouse.....

4.Justin Timberlake-Sexy Back. Its good. Most of his stuff has been. I used to hate NSYNC..except for Bye Bye Bye..that was a good guilty pleasure.Maybe little Justin and Christina are growing up.
5. Death Cab For Cutie -Crooked Teeth. They really are a band i could and do listen to a lot. It always makes me feel good. And I love the part in this song about the kids strung out on homemade speed.. good stuff. Check out 6. Someday you will be loved as well.

7.The Decemberists-The Apology song. These guys are from Portland, or at least around these parts so i guess they g et local boys make good feelings. But this song is fucking awesome. Its about a guy who is taking care of his friends bike while hes gone for the summer and it gets stolen. And he's singing an apology practically eulogizing the bike. Its gold baby.

8.My Chemical Romance-The Black Parade. This stirs up ..i don't know ....what do you call em...oh ..feelings..of an almost human nature. And I am a pro Vulcan Anti-feelings type of emotional cripple..ask anyone. But its not like crybaby feelings..just..rousing. kinda kick ass...."We'll carry on" kind of feelings.

9.The New Pornographers- Your Daddy Don't Know (10) Letter from an Occupant and (11) Slow Descent into Alcoholism. The vibe from this band is pure awesome energy. And this song is one of my favorites...from their first album I think. Its really kinda...a blend of 70's and 80's pop with a modern thing and range of vocals..male an female. I cant describe music...I just know what it makes me feel like..and this makes me feel like dancing..or doing something. Its kinda like musical speed.

10.The Shins-They'll soon discover. I'd heard about them forever. But one I finally listened to some of their music I was blown away with its awesomeness.(I told you I am not a music reviewer. I just know I like their attitude and feel. This song is from the Spongebob movie. I might like (11) "Kissing the Lipless" even more......Ok..your just gonna have to download..er..buy them both..

12.The Raconteurs-Steady as She Goes. I'm a long time fan of Jack Black since I saw The White Stripes at a little club here in Portland called the Crystal Ballroom. I'd come to see somebody else and by time the White Stripes( who were relatively unknown at this point..at least to me..)came on I was trashed and heading to the bar next door for more jello shots. But I stopped long enough to hear his cover of Dolly Paton's Jolene. It was amazing. Plus he got bonus points for not changing anything about the song. He was still singing to that hot tramp Jolene to please don't take his man. Anyway..hes part of this musical coloaberation and its real good listening.
13. Hmmm..I was gonna say download Someday you Will be Loved by Death cab, or White Trash by Modest Mouse.(I guess I did just say that), but I'm gonna send you to another Arctic Monkeys song to sing you out. (13) I Bet You Look Good On the Dance Floor. I'm gonna include..if I can figure it out...a link to all those video's over on youtube.

Movies on my partner Pick Shelf at work as of 5pm today (I work at Hollywood Video)

1.Hard Candy
2.Clerks
3.Sarah Silverman's Jesus is Magic (unless its been rented that one has had a permanent place on my shelf for months).
4.The Rules of Attraction
5.Harold and Maude(vhs)
6.Taxi Driver (vhs)
7. A clockwork Orange (vhs)
8. Run Lola Run
9.To Kill a Mockingbird
10.Freeway

Worst Movies of the Year that I never saw...and am too much of a snob to ever watch on purpose. I prefer to sit back and make fun of people that buy them.

1.Larry the Cable Guy. Come on...This was like White Trash Mascot 101. I worked to hard to get away from that kind of mentality (small town Oregon is pretty much Larry the Cable guy territory.) to rent it and watch it.

2.Benchwarmers. Ok i watched the first 10 minutes, but couldn't go through with anymore . If i wanted to practice self abuse I would...well...I would do what I normally do when i want to practice some self abuse.

3. Click. ehhh...I've never went out and tried to watch a Adam Sander movie..except for Punch Drunk Love...that wasn't typical lowest common denominator crap. I haver like "Happy Gilmore" and the films with Drew Barrymore, but eh. I can live without seeing the magic remote control movie. Maybe if i was out of my mind on some kind of substance that makes things seem funnier than they are and at the same time makes you just veg out and sit still long enough to watch a movie and munch out...but Nothing like that exists..does it?

4.Any of the weekly Steven Segall movies that are released straight to video.

5.Little Man. Come on now. A rayons brother plays a midget pretending to be a baby so he can yada yada who gives a fuck. Thats just stupid. And a movie like that stays on the tope 20 for months while Little Miss Sunshine drops in one week. * the top 20 is a display at work where we sell the previously viewed movies. It's a list of the best sellers of the previous week. But the masses are made up of the lowest common denominator and its sad. When a crap movie is released people just go nuts for it. They think, and say, that the movie must be good because we have so many copies of them and they are all checked out. True, it may be agreat movie, but it might not be either. the idea that something is good because everybody else wants it is the mentality of our culture.
+

6. The Gridiorn Gang. Or someting like that. Its the Rock being a teacher or something to inner city kids or something. I liked it better when Michelle Phiffer played that part.. OR even better when Sidney Pottier was doing it. Plus this one hs football.

I realize I'm being a snob. There is a chance that these things could be good.I thought Buffy the Vampire Slayer would be retarded but it became my favorite show EVER. And it irritates me to no end when people, like my boyfriend, make fun of it without giving it a chance..but thats different. It's different because I'm the one doing it this time, of course.
